| - I've been in the market for a new pair of running shoes and really wanted to try out some Altras. Against my better judgment, my first stop was Vertical Runner in Brecksville. I was greeted by a very small, abrasive woman, with long dark hair that had feathers in it. She was working with another customer and attempted to include me. Unfortunately, since her customer service style is to marry her customers, she doesn't multi-task very well.
I started our conversation by asking for Altras, which she completely ignored. Instead of listening to me, she asked me to get my running shoes out of my car. She claimed she was going to look at them to figure out my gait, but she never did. Again, instead of listening to me, she just went off on her own ideas and began pulling everything BUT the Altras I asked for.
She started her assessment of my needs by diagnosing me with a neuroma, a condition of permanent nerve damage that is considered a long term injury and generally results in surgery. I was astounded by her assertion considering she's not a medical doctor and hadn't done an examination. Furthermore, her diagnosis is frightening at best and patently ludicrous. Not only is she not a medical doctor, but she didn't even do a physical exam. Without either of those things, I find it hard to believe she can diagnose such an injury.
My visit continued with her ignoring everything I said to her and instead taking on the role of my personal trainer and lecturing me about my training and what I need in a shoe. Meanwhile, no Altras were brought out. After 45 minutes, she finally brought out the Altras and proceeded to spend the next half hour lecturing me and warning me about the dangers of going with a minimal shoe when I don't have enough training or strong enough feet to do so. Of course, since she never bothered to listen to anything I said, she certainly wasn't in a position to determine my training plan and since she never once watched me walk and since she is not a medical doctor, she is not in a position to tell me about the strength of my feet.
What I wanted was to try on Altras in my size. What I got was over an hour of incorrect medical diagnosis, warnings about improbable long term injuries, lectures about the strength of my feet and my training, and further warnings about the shoes I want. She flat out told me she couldn't comfortably recommend an Altra since my feet aren't used to running distances in minimal footwear...but since she never listened to a word I said, she was incorrect yet again.
The bottom line is this; Vertical Runner employees are shoes salesmen NOT medical doctors and they should be performing the duties of their job which include bringing me the shoe I asked for and nothing more. This is the second time I've visited a Vertical Runner and my thoughts are exactly the same; awful. My previous experience, two years earlier at Hudson, involved a disinterested salesperson who wanted to diagnose my feet...again, incorrectly. He asserted I pronate when I supinate. I don't need Vertical Runner employees to give me medical diagnosis, I need them to sell me shoes. But I won't ever buy from this store and I will never recommend that anyone shop here.
