| - Went here last night as part of a group of 8 people. RA was packed, and this place had no waiting for our size of group! We headed there since it was close by and we'd never tried it before. The place seemed large (split into 2 sections?), and the decor was surprisingly nice for being in a strip-mall-esque area. The place seemed a bit tucked away in a complex but was easy to find using my phone's GPS.
We came for happy hour sushi (their HH menu isn't extensive but it is cheaper than most, with 2 rolls at $4 and 2 rolls at $6) but also ordered other sushi. The food was okay - the Red Dragon roll was probably the best roll we had. It's a sweet roll with mango on top, though, which isn't what I usually prefer but the presentation was awesome and it looked delicious. After flipping through the menu for a bit trying to find the beverage section as the server suggested water or Pepsi products, I finally found it! They had fresh coconut juice (warning, this comes in a REAL Thai young coconut!), along with other juices! Yum. We ordered the shrimp tempura roll ($6) and spicy tuna roll ($4) with a side of chicken gyoza ($3). Sushi was decent, the gyoza was delicious and crispy! We sampled the Hayden roll that was ordered by another couple and it was VERY spicy from the jalapeno, but delicious. Sliced decorative dessert oranges came after we finished eating, courtesy of the sushi chef - probably the highlight of the night! This was a nice touch.
So this would have all been very nice except the service really wasn't that great, and was a bit confusing. We had 3 servers throughout the hour and a half we were there. They seemed to leave for a good period of time but then would all come back to help us within a minute or two of each other. Drink orders were not taken right away for the other 6 that arrived shortly after we did. One person from our table even said 'If they don't come to take our drink orders in 10 minutes I'm leaving." One server took our happy hour orders because it was close to 7pm, which is nice, but she took half the tables' HH orders and was about to walk away when she asked if there were any other HH orders because the hour was almost up. I had to catch her and say YES loudly so we could put the rest of our HH orders in. She would not take our other food orders at first, just the HH ones. Two cocktails (gin & tonic) ordered later on did not come and when one of us mentioned he *did* order a drink when splitting the bill later our server looked at him for a moment as if she didn't believe him. Interesting! Side of sriracha sauce did not come - we had to get it ourselves. Waters for all 8 of us strangely came after we were finished eating and most of our plates were cleared.
When she brought us our bill, we told her that she would have to split it before she handed it to us - she told us that we should have told her that at the beginning. She had us list off to her each item we ate and drank as she noted it on the receipt. She did this with one couple and disappeared for a few minutes, leaving us confused. She came back and asked how we were splitting the rest - just 3 other couples, and she said 'oh, that's easier' and had the rest of us list off each item we ate and drank as she marked them on the receipt. We received our split bills and also received another table's signed credit card receipts along with yet another bill for $35 dollars or so for another table. We returned the two extras and at this point one person from our table pulled aside one of our servers and couldn't help but give her a piece of her mind. The server said that they were understaffed that night with no bartender and that she was very sorry but there was nothing else they could do. Hmmm. The thing is, it did not seem busy at all - there was our table (8 people) and 4 other 2-tops in our section that were occupied during the time we were there. I usually don't write these kinds of reviews and am pretty patient, but last night was embarrasingly bad.
