| - This is a good comedy club, but not without some issues.
First of all, the show I saw this weekend was just plain bad. I had pretty low expectations, but Nikki Glaser only had about 10 min. of good material, and the rest of her set fell off big time and dragged on and on. Didn't help that she checked the stopwatch on her phone a few times, either. Never saw a comic do that before; clearly she wanted to finish up her set as much as I did. Her opener, Tom Brady, was mind-numbingly boring. The local comic and emcee were tolerable at best. Meh.
Unfortunately, this club doesn't get the A-list talent that Stand Up Live/Tempe Improv bring in. Chalk that up to booking agent collusion, but it blows because House of Comedy is light years beyond what those 2 clubs are, even though it's not as enjoyable as the Improv was before it changed hands. I'll likely never go back to Stand Up or Improv because the service and experience are so awful (trying to sneak in a 15% auto grat and $11 shots of vodka? PASS!), but I will absolutely hit up House of Comedy because it seems like they really are trying to be an overall solid club and not just relying on some names on the marquee to get asses in the seats.
Not a fan of the banquet table seating that seems to have become the norm. What happened to getting your own table? If the venue is full, you'll be packed in almost as tight as Stand Up. Bummer, but the crowd was sparse for Nikki Glaser, so it wasn't an issue this time.
The stage was great, the sound was nice and the facility is super clean, hip and modern. Ticket prices are reasonable, and I LOVE the fact that you don't have to order anything at all! No drink or item minimum. They are upfront with pricing on the menu, unlike Stand Up, which is nice, but I don't need a $7 Bud Light to enjoy a comedy show. Maybe one day comedy clubs will realize that sensible drink/beer pricing will generate more sales, especially when Mellow Mushroom is 100 ft down the sidewalk with a vastly better selection at more reasonable prices.
High Street is becoming more and more fleshed out, making it a much better place to spend an evening out for dinner and entertainment. House of Comedy is a nice spot, and I'll certainly come back. I hope it sticks around and steals some real solid headliners from the other guys...
