| - The very first time I heard about this place - in November 2012 - I insisted we go there ASAP and we went the very next weekend for brunch. There were two things I was told that made me do this:
1) Everything - and I mean EVERYTHING - they make involves waffles (want a BLT? Have it between two waffles!)
2) They make gluten-free waffles (which are also vegan).
Needless to say, considering I gave The Starving Artist 5 stars, it did not disappoint. Despite all the regular waffles and flour being used, I've never had an issue eating here (though I am not really sensitive to cross contamination). When you order GF, the staff ask if it's an allergy, intolerance, or preference and use that information to prepare your food correctly to the best of their ability; so kudos to them for that.
My favourite dish here is the eggs benny. As much as I LOVE traditional waffles piled high with fruit, syrup, and whipped cream; the lure of getting an eggs benny I can ACTUALLY. EAT. in a restaurant (and a damn good one at that) is too much. Also, it has caramelized bacon on it. Yes, you read that right. They do make their eggs on the runny side (and I mean REALLY runny) so if you're not into that, make sure you ask for them done differently. It comes with mixed greens an your choice of fruit, baked beans, or potato salad. I always go for the fruit, and it's always a nice, fresh mix.
The Cherry Chocolate Latte is also to die for (and as good as it sounds). I've yet to try their famous waffle bacon, but I am sure it's every bit as awesome as it sounds (how can you go wrong with waffles and bacon?).
Just this weekend, I brought my (also gluten-intolerant) mother and sister here, and they both fell in love. We all ended up with the eggs benny (again, how can you resist a gluten-free one?!) and all three of us cleared our plates.
Other fun things about this place include a wide selection of boardgames, a movie always playing on the big TV, an open-concept kitchen so you can watch them cook, a nice front (and back!) patio, an aquarium with HUGE gold fish, and really awesome local artwork displayed (and for sale) adorning the walls.
The only negative thing I can say about this place is the wait - it's quite small, and as you can expect, is VERY busy, so you'll be facing a wait during brunch hours. Since the place is small, this SUCKS during the winter, but during the summer it's less of a bummer as you can wander the neighbourhood or wait outside. However, the staff are always very friendly, upfront and as accurate as can be about table wait times or food wait times (this weekend, we had to wait over 45 minutes for food after ordering but we were warned about this before we even got a table and choose to wait).
I HIGHLY recommend visiting this place if you love waffles... or hell, even if you don't. It'll convert you.
