| - When my wife suggested going to a diner for dinner, my mind immediately went to comfort food. You know, those culinary staples that we all need in good times and bad. Needless to say, I was looking forward to it.
When we arrived at Welcome Diner, my first observation was the location. A somewhat rundown neighborhood undergoing changes of gentrification. The diner itself sits on the corner directly across from what looked like an old market that had been turned into a cafe/bar. Overall, a very intriguing location within a very positive and vibrant community.
You don't order your food at Welcome Diner like you would at your normal greasy spoon. There isn't the smell of fried potatoes and stale coffee or a waitress with big Texas hair brining you biscuits and gravy. You actually order your food from a small window in front of the diner. Once you order, you can sit inside if there is room or sit outside. The weather last night was really nice. Not hell hot, so we sat outside. FYI, finding seating outside can be a little hairy. There are several tables and some counter type seating, but all of the outside seating is first come, first serve.
The menu is simple, but take comfort food to a whole new level. To give you an example, when I think about a diner, I think about meatloaf. So I ordered Welcome's version. A Chorizo Meatloaf covered in a Chipotle and white wine cream sauce, picked vegetables, and Brahbant potatoes. Very innovative in my book. When you cut into the meatloaf you get an incredible burst of flavor with the sauce and pickled veg. The potatoes added the salty flavor to the sweetness of the pickled veg. My wife ordered the Koko, which was a sandwich consisting of a pieces fried chicken, covered in Chipotle ranch dressing topped with tomato and arugula. Then all of the aforementioned is stuff between a sliced biscuit. I only sampled the chicken, but it was full of flavor an tender. My daughter ordered the bacon Mac N' Cheese. She at a little more than half of it, which told me it was off the charts. I tried it and loved it. The bacon in the Mac N' Cheese wasn't just your average, tiny bacon bits. It was actual small pieces of bacon. As a side, we ordered the roasted Brussels sprouts. they weren't roasted as much as I do them at home, but they were still good. I also ordered a Manhattan off of their cocktail menu.
No complaints on the service or wait staff. Everyone we interacted with was very friendly. Especially the gentleman who took our order at the window. He wasn't rushing people and chatting with them a bit. Basically, making you feel.....Welcome. Parking was easy for us to find. In fact, we got a spot right in front of the diner itself. I noticed a lot of people were Ubering to the diner as well.
If I'm ever in the Phoenix area again, I'm definitely going back to the Welcome Diner.
