As promised, this is part of my post-Vegas binge series of reviews. It's a shame that I haven't ever reviewed this place considering that it has been an old favorite of my family for quite a few years now. Since the first time that I was wowed by this place, not a lot has really changed except for my own personal tastes.
The service here is fast, friendly, and efficient. Normally, my family comes very early so there is little to no wait time between getting in and being seated. However, I have noticed that if you are more towards the prime time of dining, you should expect to wait quite awhile to get in.
As for the rest of the staff, I haven't really had many problems either with the waiters and waitresses or the sushi chefs and other cooks. Most requests are met with certainty and the waitress comes often enough that the tables are pretty clean and never really full of dishes.
The food is divided into hot food and sushi. We were just in for dinner last month, so this is a review for the dinner sushi. For dinner, they offer nigiri as well as cuts of sashimi. We noticed that there is quite a bit of rice stuffed under the fish, but at least the raw cuts were nice and fresh. By far a favorite of mine is the salmon skin nigiri and accompanying rolls.
As you make your way around the sushi area, you'll notice that they have many various types of rolls. I tried most of them except for the deep fried ones because they seemed to be a heart attack waiting to happen. Anyways, the rolls are what are considered common: rice, vegetables, and questionable types of fish covered in some thick sauce. Overall the rolls were fine, though filled a bit with too much rice.
One of the things I always enjoy are their handrolls. They premake the handrolls and leave them out for you to grab on your own; however, if you have a special request for a different type of fish, you can always ask them to make you a custom hand roll.
For the hot food, there are the various normal types of things you would see at a Japanese buffet such as chicken teriyaki, fried rice, calamari, salt-pepper shrimp and the like. They also put out shrimp tempura, veggie tempura, and a delightful ramen station that is made to order. I suggest trying the spicy tonkatsu ramen! They also serve udon around the corner as well as Korean-style galbi short ribs.
For dessert, there is a pretty big selection of cakes, ice cream, frozen yogurt, as well as a chocolate fountain. When we went, however, the chocolate fountain looked like it wasn't as smooth as other places. In fact, after making a chocolate fountain at home, I've sworn off of using them. This is because of the massive amount of oil that goes into making the chocolate run smoothly. I wasn't really impressed with their desserts because the cakes, pastries, and cookies were all run of the mill offerings that you would expect at any Chinese/Japanese buffet.
Overall, this is still one of our favorite spots to stop at because the food is affordable and not insanely priced like most of the rest of the strip. I hope you have a chance to check out Makinos soon!
