  • I have been waiting to try this donut shop ever since it was first opened in March. They may be the new kid on the block, but the owners are related to the people who operate Donutsville, another one of my favorite destinations in the Valley. The shop is tiny and operates on limited hours. Upon entering, you will encounter a tightly arranged seating area facing a glass counter filled with eye-catching donuts by rows and flavors. The prices are noted on a large overhead menu. Foot traffic can be persistent, and the atmosphere is casual, inclusive, and family friendly. Among the traditional donuts ($.99), my favorite is the Red Velvet Old Fashion. During my visit, the crisp exterior was met with a rich red velvet cake flavor that came with a soft chew. I also highly enjoyed the Pumpkin Spice Cake Donut that came with a combined crispy and soft airy cake-like texture with the robust taste of pumpkin spice that really stood out. My least favorite among the traditional happened to be the Blueberry Old Fashion. The blueberry flavor was persistent and nicely composed, but it tasted too ordinary and didn't push the boundaries in any way. The Maple Bar had an outstanding maple flavor, but the size was too small, and the quality of the chew was not as soft and substantive as the ones at Donutsville and Lucky Donuts. For the filled donuts ($1.29), I find the pie donuts truly sensational. Each pie donut was made with a yeast donut as the base, a dollop of custard in the center, thin icing, and a touch of fruit at the top. I wished there could be more custard to fill the center, but otherwise I thought they were all winners. The Peach Pie was my favorite, followed by the Cherry Pie, and then the Apple Pie ranked not far behind. Among the fancy donuts ($1.79), my absolute favorite was the Crème Brulee Yeast Donut that came with an ultra soft chewy yeast donut, a dollop of vanilla crème in the middle, and a torched sugary crispy outer layer with a raspberry sitting on top. I also enjoyed the PB & J Yeast Donut, but thought the donut could use more jam, and the layer of chocolate frosting was competing with the taste of the peanut butter. Additionally, I thought the Salted Caramel Yeast Donut came with an excellent layer of caramel frosting, but the second level salt flavor was absent and underperformed. My least favorite donut of all was the Red Velvet Cupcake Donut due to the profile of the cake frosting. It tasted too light and instead they should consider using a more dense cream cheese frosting to authenticate the sensibility of a red velvet cupcake. To date, the one at Topped Doughnuts is still my favorite. Service was patient, friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient on each of my visits. I have seen many people buying them by the dozens (Traditional: $9.90, Fancy: $17.70, and Custom Dozen: $9.90 with extra on the filled and fancy donuts), so they do replenish the glass counter with freshly made donuts from the kitchen. Price-wise, these donuts were highly affordable, but also smaller and not as plump compared to other places. What a wonderful discovery and a great way to combine breakfast and dessert into a single bite! Hopefully they will continue to experiment with new flavors to continue to raise the bar for how donuts should be. Highly addictive, I would love to return soon to try their Strawberry Cheesecake Donut, Devils Food Cake Donut, and S'Mores Yeast Donut, among others.
