I feel like a heel not jumping on the adorable Menchie's wagon, but once I got beyond the literal kid in a candy shoppe excitement of the toppings bar, the adult in me admitted that their froyo just ain't that good.
Yes, it's worth going just for the mega-great topping experience. Everyone loves choice, loves being able to taste samples before buying, loves the freedom of self-serve. And, okay, the fact that they have everything from sugar cereals to two kinds of coconut (toasted and raw) is awesome.
But the eating part isn't nearly as fun as the choosing part. Once you're done choosing, you realize you've got a huge container full of sugary dessert that doesn't taste nearly as good as a scoop from Baskin-Robbins just up the street. And the huge container is another thing: they deliberately give you huge cups to fill and you pay by weight. So if you fill the cup to "get your money's worth" your little froyo treat runs you upwards of $8-10 dollars. And if you just take the amount you'd want in the first place, it feels like you're getting a tiny portion (in relation to the huge cup) for $3 or $4. Such a dessert dilemma!
My advice? Skip the watery-tasting froyo and get a scoop of Jamoca Almond Fudge two blocks west.
