| - It's kind of hard to summon a "Woohoo" and exclamation point for refrigerators, microwave ovens and color TV's . . . household laundry equipment, etc., so I had to think about what might warrant that 5th star, that "as good as it gets" for an appliance store, and I think Spencer's gets it.
Spencer's doesn't try to carry everything or be everything to every body. What this 40 year old locally owned chain of 5 stores does carry is a good selection of name-brand major household appliances including refrigerators, cooktops, ranges, wall ovens, microwaves, dishwashers, washers and dryers, flat screen TVs, as well as Simmons mattresses, counter tops and flooring. They deliver, install, and service what they sell, and service appliances in general whether bought there or not. And somehow this small chain managed to beat even my beloved Costco some 7 years ago on Whirlpool front loading washer and dryer, and after that, on a Whirlpool french-door refrigerator as well, and that including delivery, set up and installation. I did not purchase an extended warranty - and thankfully have not needed one, but Spencer's prices on those are refreshingly reasonable and at those prices, may be worth the peace of mind.
Spencer's carries the major name brands, from their more modest offerings to their more impressive and more expensive. Brands include Frigidaire. Electrolux, GE, Kitchenaid, LG, Maytag, Samsung, Whirlpool, and the high-end Thermador and Arizona-made Sub-Zero and Wolf brands as well.
The attentive KNOWLEDGEABLE personal service and helpfulness has also been impressive. While confident I personally would starve to death working on commission, perhaps it does have a a way of motivating superior knowledge and helpfulness among those who last in the business, and I've been fortunate to have worked with long-time Spencer's salesman John Price over the past 8 years, previously only by telephone, never having met in person until today. How this family-owned local company has lasted 40 years in a market crowded with Best Buys, Fry's Electronics, and my beloved Costco, among others, I don't know, but I'm glad they have and hope they continue to do so. They certainly surpass the big box stores in terms of personal service and service after the sale - and have shown to my amazement that they can on price as well. If you can afford to buy new at all - You CAN afford to shop local.
