There's a $5 entry fee to the conservation area, hiking visitor center and scenic drive. If that deters you then you're not my kind of people. =) The views are just as numerous as they are beautiful. I suggest going in to get a map of the area, from the visitor center. They'll give you a little bit of history about the area and tell you what each stopping point has to offer. They have recently rebuilt the road through the park and it's a very smooth drive with a lot of space to stop for photos.
The tortoises were hibernating when we visited (November). So that was less exciting, but just a natural part of their life style. So I will be back.
The area is known for its great rock climbing. You should not do this without experience and proper gear. It's meant for rock climbers, not average people that like to pretend to be mountain goats. =)
We saw 4 deer and a rabbit. Thankfully no snakes.
I would say the only down side that I experienced was that the hikes are not clearly marked. It was very hard to find most trail heads and you won't see them from your car.
