  • I had time to kill yesterday and decided to take my 6 year old daughter to Concord Mills Mall. My plan was to walk around with her for a while on a $10 budget. Maybe get some ice cream or buy her something nice and inexpensive. She wanted to stop in at Sea Life's retail store and look at stuffed fish and trinkets. Fine with me. It was apparent as soon as I started looking at price tags that I would most likely not be buying anything in there for under $10. However, I let her continue to "window shop". We were looking at some nice t-shirts when a clerk came over, uninvited, and injected that "even though the tag says $15, these shirts are on sale for $7.50." We were not particularly looking at a specific "t" but since they were only $7.50, $2.50 under budget, I decided that if my daughter liked one of the shirts I would buy it for her. The clerk stood by the entire time we were browsing the shirts, commenting on how cute they were and, eventually, helping my daughter choose one she liked. I thanked the clerk and said we would be back in a few minutes if my daughter decided she wanted the shirt. We left and walked around for another 15 minutes or so and returned to the store to purchase the shirt. We approached the counter with our merchandise and met a different clerk to ring up our order. I mentioned that the other clerk had told us that it should be $7.50 and not $15.00. The new clerk informed me that according to her information it would be $15. I challenged her and she brought the other clerk over. I was then informed that the shirt my daughter picked out was not on sale as promised, but that there was another shirt that was on sale. So, I sent my daughter back to get the shirt that we were originally looking at, the one that the clerk specifically referred to when she told me they were all on sale. The clerk then said this one was also not on sale and that the one on sale was a completely different one that wasn't even on the same rack and that my daughter did not like at all. Needless to say, since I only had a $10 bill in my pocket and the one my daughter liked was $15 I now had to leave empty handed. Luckily, my little girl wasn't upset for too long and only cried half of the 30 minute drive home. I am disappointed that a clerk, someone who is of the age to have children of her own, possibly small grand children, would go out of her way to use a "Bait and switch" tactic on a small child. If she had just asked me in advance if there was something she could help me with, or offered on demand assistance if I needed anything, I would have gladly approached her if we found anything we liked and would most likely have made a purchase. Instead, she lied to me about the price of the product, gave hope to a young child, and then didn't even apologize when I confronted her about the ruse. I told her on the spot that what she did was mean and that she shouldn't have done that to a little girl. The response? Nothing. What she should have done was sell me the shirt that SHE recommended for $7.50. I understand retail. I get it. But, I didn't ask for any assistance, I took her at her word that the merchandise we wanted was on sale for $7.50. Why wouldn't I? She is the employee, she is the perceived expert on her inventory, she went out of her way to tell me that the merchandise was on sale. If it was an honest mistake it could have been fixed on the spot by honoring the clerks mistake. Instead, they let me leave empty handed, with a child who was visibly upset, and lost a potential customer for life. Not just in Concord Mills, but in all of their locations across the county. I travel for a living and always look for neat little gifts for my kids. Never at this place.
