  • I've never been wealthy. I've always worked for non-profits, and that term not only applies to the business itself, but also to employees. We're not making any profits. But we still need to feed ourselves, and being frugal is not easy with the greed mongering big bird holding nearly the monopoly on big grocery stores. Sure, you've got Shop n Save, Community and Shur Save...but they're mostly the big bird on a diet. I do most of my cooking from scratch, with real ingredients. Which means...staples. Staples do not require big brand names aimed at profiting shareholders. Flour, eggs, butter, milk, sugar, don't need three bucks added because they have a fancy name and a big ad campaign. For just this reason, I've been shopping Aldi for several years now, and actually haven't set foot in a Giant Eagle or 'Market District' unless I needed something REALLY odd that absolutely could NOT be found anywhere else. I would travel to the burbs to hit an Aldi, before going a mile for a Giant Eagle. Then came the Shadyside store, and it became my favorite Aldo of them all. It's very clean, and the parking garage is actually kind of cool, having once been a multi level car dealership. The staff is friendly and helpful, and they frequently have what they call 'special buys' that range from food items to household goods and gardening items. But what it really comes down to is the absolute reasonability of pricing. Butter is butter. A pound of it at Aldi is $2.99. Pretty much always. NOT 'on sale'. Things like Half and Half are generally around $2. Try finding that in ANY other store in town. Five pound bag of flour or Sugar, again, right around $2. ALWAYS. I even have to laugh occasionally when I see Aldi brands at the Market Outlet in the Strip District...and the 'scratch and dent' shop is charging sometimes MORE than Aldi. Aldi will not be the place to find your fancier high end goods, but if you actually enjoy cooking, the basics are affordable. BUT, they also have all of the convenience items, frozen goods, plenty of affordable meats, canned goods, bakery items (again, a loaf of bread for under two bucks - try THAT anywhere else), breakfast cereals, snacks, all in a pleasant setting without the greed hype. The produce section is smaller than a lot of places, but again, the prices are better, it's fresh, and they've also added an organic section. Often times, the basics are actually cheaper than what they offer at the produce section of the Market Outlet in the Strip, most of which needs to be eaten QUICKLY for being the 'past that sell by date'. Aldi is fresher and cheaper. A large seedless cucumber at Aldi? 99 cents. Past the sell-by date at Market Outlet? $2. Why? Soooo you need a quarter to emancipate a shopping cart...you get it back when you return the shopping cart. So you don't go home with two plastic bags per item like you do at every other grocery store in town...grab an empty box from their pile and use it. Or bring your own bags. On a shallow level, I also have to say that this location for Aldi produces a MUCH nicer level of eye candy. Stop feeding the greed! Aldi has all you need for the basics.
