  • In my opinion, this place is a bit of a scam. It's not a true farmer's market in the sense of what I would define as a farmer's market, which is where most, really all, of the product should be sourced from local farms. The majority of the product here is the same sources you can buy at a local grocery store, maybe just for slightly less. They do mark what is "local", so just know that anything not specifically marked as such isn't. A few things I have witnessed them do that I would consider borderline morally wrong and in some cases might be illegal. They are notorious for taking non-local items such as berries, tomatoes and cherries (those that are the same ones sold in the groceries stores) out of their plastic containers and putting them into the traditional green holders that scream local. Although not marked local, to the average shopper it is certainly deceiving. Another noteworthy event I recently witnessed was taking packaged lettuce (in this case Earthbound Farm Organic Spinich), which has already expired, and scratching out the pre-printed use by date from the manufacturer since it had already expired. I know this b/c I was there three days ealier and had bought the same packaged spinich where the use by date was that day (specifically 6/12/13). I bought a pack b/c it was $0.99 compared to its usual $3.99. When I went back on 6/15/13 I noticed the same lettuce with the date completely scratched through so it wasn't at all visible, however, whoever did the scratching did a slack job as I found two containers where I could still see the 6/12 date. I only go here for two reasons - their local berries when in season and their cantalopes. Take my recommendation and visit one of the real farmer's markets. The one at Atherton Mills and in Elizabeth are both great. And if those are a bit too small and/or pricey, visit the state market off of Billy Graham. If you don't mind the logistics, it's a fantastic market, with lots of local farmers, governed by the state of NC and the prices are by far the best.
