  • Somewhere around age 21 I decided I loved to fly and tried to do it as much as possible. As a result I racked up quite a lot of time in airports (and debt and no miles because while well-traveled I was also kind of an idiot about it). If there's one thing I appreciate in life, it's a manageably-sized port. Cleveland has this. There's one main hallway which leads to the three terminals, and while that makes departing and meeting people easy, actually getting to that hallway can be a lesson in patience and perspective. Most recently, I flew to Chicago and fortunately my ride dropped me off - wait, let me back up for a sec - I needed a ride. Getting to the airport requires a friend, a car you don't mind paying to leave behind or a fancy pants limo (or taxi...whatever) - public transit kinda goes there but is awful tricky. Anyway, my friend dropped me off and once you've been screamed at by traffic cops in both Chicago airports for pausing long enough for your charge to grab her bag and bail out of the still-moving car, it's nice to be able to park, turn the car off and hug goodbye if you want while the porters and cops (wait, were there cops?) gaze onward, smiling at such cuteness. Once inside, pick your security line wisely and by that I mean walk past the Information desk and the first security section and keep going. By the time you get to the last security checkpoint, the lines will probably be *a lot* shorter. On my travel day, there was only one x-ray belt and body scanner (yeah) available. People were peeved, man. Some of the people had flights boarding while they stood at least 35 people away from the machines. Unfortunately, no one on staff encouraged them to go to the next lines down. Fail. Now that you're through, if you have time to roam around to get a bite, do it. There's a Great Lakes with at least six beers on tap (but waaaaay overpriced eats), some standard mall-type hot pretzel and frozen yogurt joints as well as a restaurant called The Pub which has...well, you can figure that out. The gates have lots and lots of outlets and charging stations (YES!) as well as comfy seating. If you need to get away from the screaming kid, those college students or that group of Browns fans (hee!) just go around the nearest corner and hang out. It's small, you won't miss your flight.
