  • One of my top 10 restaurants in town. I have eaten here countless times. It's always a great experience. It is such an improvement over the former Magnus (both the South American and Scandinavian incarnations). So many things to love about the menu...Cesar salad with fresh anchovies (not oil packed), seaweed slaw, shrimp po' boy, lobster roll, fish & corn chowder, raw bar, oysters, fresh Lake Michigan white fish, whole red snapper, exceptional French fries...I have never had a dish I did not like. Even the little touches, like house-made tartar sauce, are spot on. For those who need meat, the Tempest burger and steaks are just as amazing as the fish. The bar makes solid, quality cocktails - not craft cocktails, but well executed. The wine menu is short, but well considered with plenty of options that are appropriate for the food. You can come for drinks only in the bar and listen to live jazz some nights. The bar is uniquely modern with green glass and purple stained glass windows. Service has always been friendly and attentive, appropriate for a restaurant in this price range. Like most restaurants in Madison, customers dress in levels of attire that range from casual (for men, jeans/collared shirt/leather shoes) to suit/tie. In summer, there is outside seating where I have seen people in a smart shorts outfit. They have a private room that can seat 36 for dinner or 50 for standing event. One complaint...the acoustics are challenging, creating a noise level that can be an issue for some. If you have good hearing and can easily separate conversation from background noise, you will be fine. If not...when the music stops for a brief moment, the guests seem to stop talking in unison and you can get in a quick word!!!
