| - I never understood why so many people hated going to the dentist until I visited Gentle Dental Scottsdale. Don't be fooled by their name. I should have read all the awful reviews they received here and on Google Reviews because I had two horrible experiences.
The first time I needed to go in to repair a small chipped filling. I called to schedule the appointment and the guy on the phone said it shouldn't take more than an hour for the whole visit. I planned accordingly around my busy work schedule and allocated two hours for the appointment (just to be safe). I should have trusted the reviewers who said THEY RUN HORRIBLY BEHIND because it took them 45 minutes to even start to taking an x-ray. They wanted to take 19 x-rays of my entire mouth, but I told them I was short on time and that they should probably just focus on the one area that I needed repairing on...THEN THEY ENDED UP CHARING ME EXTRA FOR AN "EMERGENCY VISIT" because they didn't evaluate everything, only that one part of my mouth. The admin guy who was ringing me up at the end (who was the one who told me to just block an hour for the visit) was incredibly unprofessional about it. I asked to clarify why I was being charged so much and he just brushed it off saying, "that's just how insurance codes for that visit". I asked to see literature on it and he said, "I'm not sure where in any of these six giant binders it's located...you probably don't have time for me to start searching through it." I responded, "No, please go ahead and search the binders. I have time." Then what do you know, he sighed pulled the paper out of one in just a few seconds (almost like he was lying about not knowing where the cost breakdown was). I was so annoyed at this point and just paid the ridiculous fee to leave. I'm not sure what his name was but he was a tall, peppy Latino whose poor customer service would surprise you based on how seemingly friendly he initially seemed.
I had to go back a few months later for a general checkup and cleaning because I was overdue. I typically like to give people/places second chances, and I was hoping this time would be better...boy was I wrong...They said I needed another filling, which was fine and so started prepping for that...
In the meantime, the dental hygentist came to evaluate my need for a cleaning. She said my gums were so inflamed we'd need to a bunch of deep cleaning with a fancy laser. Another one of their unprofessional admins came over to go over the costs and told me it would cost $800+. I said I would need to postpone that (to get a second quote) and that it wasn't critically necessary in that moment. This little chum bucket had the nerve to tell me that I was wrong and that it was medically necessary. I persiseted saying, "you just said that was what the hygenist recommends, not that it was technicallynecessary." To that he responded, "Well, she recommened it so it's necessary." I was getting annoyed with this guy, and said "Okay, well I can't get that work done today so we'll have to look into it for another time." I asked if they could do a basic cleaning still (since I was overdue), and they said "Absolutely not. Our hygenist would get in trouble if she gave you a basic cleaning when she belived you needed a fancy deep cleaning." Who would she even get in trouble with?!? That's like depriving a starving child of an affordable snack, just because he can't afford a whole meal. That makes no sense...
A few minutes after I had declined the $800+ work, the dental assistant came back and said that they decided they didn't need to numb me for the filling I was planning to get afterall. WHAT THE HECK? Just because I don't want to shell up a ton of money for a procedure I'm not convinced is necessary, you guys think I derserve all the pain that comes along with a filling. ABSURD!
Once they were finished I went up to the front to settle up, and the same punk from earlier kept pressing me to schedule my $800 procedure. I said I would call to schedule and he insisted that they give me a reminder call for me to schedule. ugh.
Just one star for this place, as the dentist wasn't horrible and the work she did seems to be sufficient. She wasn't super nice though, even though I thought we could vibe since she seemed to be Filipino and I always secretly count on my fellow Filipinos being friendly. The dental assistant was nice enough (but seem very genuine). The admin guys at the front were THE ABSOLUTE WORST. UGH. They're the main reason the place left such a bad tast in my mouth.
Also, the equipment is pretty old school and clunky (i.e., film x-rays, and those clunky cardboard chunks that gag you). The staff at my new wonderful dentist office even said that's pretty archaic. ALSO, I should mention that my new fabulous dental office was able to give me the cleaning I needed (that wasn't as severe as the hygenist at gental dental said I need) for 1/4 of the out of pocket cost.
