| - Every spring I need to pick out some new victims (the name perennial is perhaps misleading). This year, I decided to try a "real garden store" after finding the selection of gardening related stuff lacking at Home Depot or Loblaws.
I have mixed feelings about Fiesta Gardens. They had a pretty good selection of plants, but not huge. Most of the tags contained a reasonable description of the conditions that the plants expect (rather than just a sun graphic). However, there was no one available to help me pick out plants. I think the only person working there was the girl at the checkout, who was very busy. Most of plants do not have price tags, which I found frustrating. Since I'm probably going to kill these plants, I don't want to spend too much money on them!
The selection of planting materials was not bad. I was able to pick up wood chips, which can be used to prevent excess evaporation in potted plants, but only a giant bag of them. You don't need a lot of wood chips, so now I have to store this bag for a couple years? They had a good selection of different peat moss, but I instead opted for a pre-mixed soil that already contained peat. The other thing I wanted was some gravel to help with drainage. They had decorative stones, but no cheap gravel. I opted to go with out.
You could do a lot worse than Fiesta Gardens, but you could probably also do a bit better... maybe next year for me!
