La Tolteca is easily one of the best Mexican food joints in Phoenix. What a deli counter is to your local grocery store, La Toleca's food counter is to your local Mexican grocery store. While I did most of my shopping for produce and Mexican goods a few blocks over at the Phoenix Ranch Market (they have more of a selection), I did prefer grabbing lunch at La Tolteca. Their tacos are absolutely fantastic and they are incredibly vegetarian friendly. Prices are super inexpensive and the recipes are totally legit. They say that ethnic eateries are best when you see people from that actual ethnicity flocking to eat there. This folks, is the place where I see the most Mexican families in downtown grabbing some freshly grilled pollo asado to-go to feed their families at home. They've also got a steller panaderia, too. I'm just a sucker for those pastries with the cream custard in the middle... and their jamaica (hibiscus) always packs a refreshing punch. Parking is free, but they're not open terribly late so be sure to check their hours when planning your visit.
