  • I was never a fan of the 99 cents stores, but my mom more or less won me over. This is a good one. It is a well-organized store, with lots of selections, and in a decent neighborhood. It's odd that now you have to pay for a cart, but I guess they may have had a problem with people walking off with them, so they adapted. They lose a star from me for the lack of clear signage on a greater than 99 cent item--a cute little pink backpack with pockets for photos--that I wanted to buy for my sister-in-law. The sign at the base of the backpack section said "$2.99." But I was charged $3.99. Not a big difference, but super annoying, anyway. I asked the cashier to check, who ALSO thought it looked like the bag cost $2.99. But not being sure of herself, she called over a supposed manager, who looked at the tiny, fine print on a tag on the bag (previously unseen), which said $3.99. (But of course, all of the items in the 99c store carry tags or imprints of prices HIGHER than what they are sold for...that's what a discount store is all about). So, she charged me the dollar more, and said that I had read the sign wrong, that it belonged to the OTHER, nearly identical backpacks (just in a different color) that were alongside the pink backpack I had chosen. It left a sour taste in my mouth. Especially as I had just purchased $85 worth of stuff. AND, the lady who was in line behind me went to look for the backpack after she saw mine, and asked me about it! I am helping market their stuff! Why not give me the price that she and I thought it would be? Especially because the sign appeared to be for what I thought it was, and the cashier even thought so. But I will no doubt be back.
