  • Following a busy Sunday, I was having a serious craving for pasta. Living gluten free, I don't often get the chance to enjoy pasta in restaurants. There's no notation on the menu or on the website, but after catching a Yelp review mentioning a gluten free offering, we took the chance and headed to Mama Ricotta's. On a Sunday evening, dining on a whim, we were pleased to be seated immediately even though we didn't have a reservation. We were placed in the back corner of the restaurant, which offered a decent vantage point for people watching and peeking at dishes coming out of the kitchen. Our server came and shared with me that most of the pasta dishes can be made gluten free by substituting a GF penne. I hemmed and hawed and ended up choosing the Carbonara. My date ordered a salad to start, and it arrived within minutes of placing our order. The pacing was strange, though -- he got his salad, bread for the table was delivered, and our entrees came within five minutes of one another. Generally, I'm pumped about speedy service, but it created an awkward timeline of our meal -- potentially because we were dining 20 minutes before closing time. My meal was placed in front of me in a large, black ceramic bowl. Three greasy fingerprints reflected the light on the rim of my bowl, and a long streak followed around the edge from where someone in the kitchen had attempted to wipe my plate before service. On a white plate, this may not have been so glaring, but it definitely caught my attention. The kitchen needs more clean linens, apparently. My pasta was delightful. The flavor was perfect and it was delivered at just the right temperature. I was pleased with the portion size and with the generosity of the gentleman grating fresh parmesan over my noodles. I also sampled my date's short rib, and it was quite good. If I wasn't so happy with the flavor, price and portion size of my gluten free pasta, the frantic service and streaky plate would have turned me off entirely. I'll give Mama Ricotta's another try when it's not so close to closing time, and hopefully they'll earn more stars from me.
