  • Some friends were talking about this place, and then BlogTO talked about it...and well I love ice cream, so I went. Gotta say, with minor tweaks, this place has great potential but kind of misses the mark . With Wong's, I love their location, located just east of Gerrard/Broadview (aka old Chinatown), it's a nice addition to the neighbourhood. Easy to access from Broadview station, or from the College/Carleton (506) street car. Also, you can't miss the storefront sign and the store interior, was very vibrant, minimalistic and visually eye-catching. Not to mention, there's an ice cream sandwich sofa (it's awesome). The flavours offered there are really unique. Some of them might not sound as good, but I'm adventurous and had an opportunity to try out many flavours. Some of the flavours included, the infamous Black Sesame with Salted Egg (very rich, so beware), Lemongrass Lime Sorbet (my fave), Wasabi Honey (definitely the unique one!), Chocolate Yuzu, Ube and other flavours which I can't remember off the top of my head. Had a taste of as many flavours I could get my hands on. Can't forget that Wong's uniquely sells their ice cream in these littlle take-out Chinese's containers. It's rather cute to be honest...lol. Also, vegan based flavours are offered at the shop too My verdict, great flavour, but the overall feeling was that the ice cream was too....sweet. And it was consistently overtly sweet, no matter which flavour I sampled. The best direct comparison I can make from Wong's is probably Kekou (yes I know it's Gelato), but the taste at Kekou isn't as aggressively sweet as Wong's is. I think my favourite flavour was probably Lemongrass Lime Sorbet, followed by Wasabi Honey (that one was quite the kick!) I know the complaint is just that one, but it's a rather major one. The taste of the ingredients need to take centre stage, and so I feel the sweetness is doing a disservice to the overall product, so please tone the sweetness down, since all I had was a single scoop of ice cream. They also offered this Ube Sundae which I wanted, but if the base ice cream is too sweet, then adding condensed milk, and anything else that goes with the sundae would just be overload. Overall, great place, room for improvement, hopefully when I'm around for a next time, it'll be better!
