| - I must admit I have adulterous tendencies when it comes to finding and keeping a hairdresser in Toronto. I've been everywhere: Coupe Bizarre, Holt Renfrew, Vidal Sassoon, Civello, Truefitt & Hill and a myriad of others.
I've had some stellar cuts at these places, but I often find that the first one or two are excellent and then the quality drops off. At one place the owner of the salon spent lots of time on my first cut, making sure that I was very happy and that I got the best cut possible. The next time I went back he basically gave me an army cadets cut--with clippers! If I wanted that I'd join the military and just go for the whole lifestyle hook, line and sinker. Until then, scissors only, sir!
I think the place I've gone back to the most is the Aveda Institute. First of all, it's dirt cheap. And I like that. The value is very good considering you get a pretty good cut with all Aveda products, including a scalp massage and mini facial at the end. The catch here is your hairdresser is a student. This can be good or bad--it's really like a Forrest Gump box of chocolates scenario. You never know whatcha gonna get.
I've had the full gamut of haircuts here, but I do find they tend to be very good (the students are cutting to impress their educators, so they really are trying). Today I had a really pleasant girl named Leah. She gave me a sort of glory-of-the-80s Ricky Schroder meets dapper Don Draper cut.... I asked for it, so that's not a bad thing. Once, though, a student styled my hair in a fauxhawk about two years after they were in style. I walked as far as the corner and desperately tried to restyle it.
All in all, very good! $18 for a cut is pretty darn good. (You can also get $35 cuts from the Academy students. These are professionals who come to upgrade their skills and learn the Aveda technique.) Give it a try; it's only hair, it will grow back. At this price you can't afford to look like a bushman/woman.
