  • Previously I mentioned a few instances of buying produce or perishables that were rotten or expired... it's gotten worse, to the point that I can't trust the juices, berries, or watermelon. I've wasted at least $50 the past few months on spoiled food from this Trader Joe's, a store that I'm otherwise very fond of. The watermelon spears look all right, but 3 out of 5 cartons were filled with pieces that were too tough to bite into, with the texture of rind. Don't make my mistake and pick the closest box of berries, turn it over and make sure there aren't moldy ones on the bottom or hiding in the middle. And sadly... my beloved grapefruit juice, sigh. If homemade citrus hooch is what you're going for, then carry on, because more than half of the cartons I've bought lately were fermented. Same problem with a few limeade cartons, too. They fizz when opened, and you can see the bloated containers in the pictures--these were taken on the way home from the store, so it's not like I left them out in the sun. Shame on me for being in a hurry while I shop, because you can usually tell which ones are bad if you look for the puffy carton, and you can see the bubbles. The rancid acidic taste will hit you upside the head if the other signs don't alert you to the problem. Yes, I could drive back to the store and exchange the items, but when it's 20 minutes one way, I just don't want to. I do wish TJ's would step up the quality control on fresh goods, because again, otherwise I do love this adorable store.
