| - Adjacent to a sculpture foundry, SSC is set up to supply working artists and artisans. There aren't any evening and only very limited weekend hours, and the display is clean and well-organized but totally no-frills. As with any store that supplies trades, staff can be a little impatient with hobbyists who walk in right before closing (as I did on my first visit), which IMO is not entirely unreasonable. The staff have infinite patience in answering technical questions, however, and can be extraordinarily helpful if you go at a reasonable time and are willing to have your tutorial interrupted by people making purchases. They also have a good selection of technical books. I first went when I couldn't find a very specific material, and a staff person at Above Ground (itself a Toronto art supply mecca!) told me that for what I needed, the best place in the GTA was Sculpture Supply Canada. I've been back many times.
Simply put, SSC sells an impressive range of (who'd've guessed?) sculpture supplies, and has the exclusive Canadian distributorship for a number of product lines, including at least one core to the film industry. There are materials for carving (blocks of stone and carving tools), but the core of the business seems to be supplying artists who will be bringing objects for casting at the foundry, and artists and artisans who make their own castings. Their prices are not always the very lowest in the GTA, but they often are, and tend not to be unreasonable. They're set up to supply trade, not hobbyists. They're within walking distance to Kipling subway station, on an industrial cul-de-sac.
