  • I was born and raised in Las Vegas. I have been coming to Hugo's since I was a kid. I went to homecomings and proms here. Birthdays and other celebrations as well. Anytime a friend from out of town asked for a suggestion on a good quality steakhouse Hugo's was my first thought. I've been to every fine dining restaurant Las Vegas has to offer and still regarded Hugo's as my favorite. So you would see my great GREAT disappointment with my experience tonight. It's my birthday. My fiancé made a reservation for us and was very excited to try my "favorite spot". It was his first time and will be his last. Our waiter came up to our table with a miserable look on his face right off the bat. Did not introduce himself, did not ask what the occasion was (although we told the host it was my birthday, twice) he asked for our drinks and rushed off. Almost 15 minutes later he finally checked back with us to ask if we were ready to order. I am in the service industry and I am very sympathetic to waiters and service. I always give the benefit of the doubt to them when it takes a bit longer due to volume or short staffing. This was not the case. I saw him standing around, catering to other tables and didn't so much as look at us. A thumbs up at that point would have sufficed. We finally ordered appetizers and entrees. As I was about to ask about the table side salad he ran off like we were a bother. My fiancé then excused himself to the "bathroom" but unbeknownst to me he actually went back to the host stand to make sure they could send a little cake out with a candle for my birthday. The host said "absolutely". I tried to wave down our waiter to ask a question, he made eye contact and ran away to the back. Our appetizers came first. We were not checked on once by the water until the table side salad (which should have been before the appetizers) were served. Again in a rushed and rude tone. Eggs? Red onion? Dressing? And everything was hurriedly thrown in a bowl and slopped onto our plates. A LONG while later our entrees came out. Both ordered medium. The couple next to us were given great and personable service and their salads were done before ours even tho they were seated well well after we had initially arrived. When we were finished with our salad plates we put them to the front of the table, our waiter walked by THREE times seeing the plates and just left them. Finally a busser picked them up 5 minutes later. I am 31 and my fiancé is 29. We look younger and we pretty much chalked it up to age discrimination as we are extremely polite to servers everywhere we go. The Beef Wellington was disappointing and the Rack of Lamb was lack luster. Garlic mash had zero flavor. The food was the least of our grievances though because the service was so bad and impersonal. Usually you have two waiters helping you out. We saw the other waiter maybe twice and he was very polite. His name was Dave and we wish he would have been around more often. The bill came right after the chocolate covered strawberries. No birthday cake, no candle nothing special for my birthday even tho we told the host twice. 200 dollars later and my fiancé was really upset. Hugo's Cellar is no longer my favorite restaurant. I will never suggest it again. I work in the number one nightclub in the world and have suggested it many times. Never again. My fiancé refuses to come back. In all of my times coming to Hugo's in the past 25 years. (Yes 25 years!!!!) I have always had a pleasant experience and although one bad experience shouldn't ruin it for me, it has. My birthday dinner was not special. I would name the waiter in the review but he never once told us his name and we were too frustrated and upset to ask. We just wanted to get out of there. Go to Mastro's or Del Frisco's their quality of food and service are MUCH better. Maybe this is an end of an era. Very sad.
