  • The 2 star review isn't for MEC the business, or the quality of the products, but it is directly representative of the quality of shopping experience at the Toronto store. To be fair, every MEC (Victoria, North Van, Van, Calgary and Halifax) I have been to, is equally lacking in service by my experience. The Toronto store is stocked well, and usually has everything I'm after, the issue is the careless attitudes of the staff being paid to help customers and keep the store/merchandise looking somewhat organized. Sometimes I go a whole visit without being asked if I need help or even greeted, one time when the effort was made to engage with an employee he told my friend that he "doesn't talk to customers", another time when my friend had a question about a Patagonia product we were told to go down the street to the Patagonia store and ask them. Calling with a question will leave you on hold for 10-15 minutes or sometimes the call just gets let go after being transferred to the department you're looking for. The cashiers are hit or miss - sometimes they're warm and friendly, other times they're really bummed they have to do work and ring things through. I know retail can be thankless though, so I kind of understand. Also, why does the men's section always look like a 13 year old boys messy bedroom? I understand that MEC is busy and sees a lot of traffic each day, but I don't understand how so many indifferent people are employed in the same building. That being said though, MEC provides a lot of good things - a great selection of decent brands, a wealth of resources, and cheaper prices than most other outdoor stores thanks to their co-op structure. Their in-house line of gear offers really great value - thanks to their method of ripping off the designs of the big brands, it provides a really high level of quality for a really good price. A great store if you don't require a human to give you personal attention meant to help you. As the 2 stars means, I've experienced better.
