yes it's expensive and yes the offerings are quite slim. You definitely won't be coming here to get your daily milk and eggs (not sure they have eggs actually).
Forget about the barely there produce section, the shelf of cereals and the ludicrously expensive sushi.
There are really only 3 reasons to shop here:
1. They have something exclusive (neuhaus chocolates, high end oil & vinegars) or you don't have the time to travel to the source. They carry pastries, cookies, cakes from a lot of small Toronto bakeries which are hard to find otherwise (Sullivan+Bleeker, Queen B, Rahier etc)
2. You need dinner/lunch (the ready foods counter is quite expansive and usually palatable). It won't be that much more than take away ($10-$15). Beware of the fish though, prices on those dishes are high
3. You know something is cheaper there than other places. it's rare, but there are certain items in the store that are priced below other stores or are just as expensive but better quality. The house made turkey breast is an example.
I have never tried the coffee shop offerings myself, but it is always busy so they must not be totally terrible.
