| - This may be my first negative review. I generally come here to praise establishments and encourage others to visit. I've been to Handlebar once before and enjoyed it, but today was not good. I'm not writing this to discourage anyone, but more so in hopes that management sees it and addresses it.
My girlfriend and I arrived at about 2:50pm today and asked if they had any specials or happy hour going on. The server said no so we ordered two beers(They have an above average selection, by the way). We began looking through the food menu and noticed happy hour began at 3. Now, while she was technically correct that there was no happy hour at 2:55, I've never been to an establishment that didn't make me aware of an immediately approaching happy hour.
Moving on. We ordered the soft pretzel appetizer. Brutal. They looked and tasted like the dish had been prepared 20 minutes prior. The pretzels were lukewarm and the cheese had already congealed. That was disappointing. Afterwards, the server acknowledged the happy hour once we asked.
We shared a burger and fries. The burger was good, but "good" like a Carl's Jr burger is good. Fries were excellent - on point, really.
Overall, I didn't feel welcome by the server and she didn't seem like she was happy to take care of us. Also, another server legit changed her shirt out in the open in front of everyone. Whatever. Manager on duty was getting them ready for an event tonight so maybe all were distracted, but it was a very distasteful experience. I'm generally never someone that specifically calls out a server, but she had pink hair and I think someone called her "Mercedes."
If you're walking by, walk 20 more feet and hit up Zipps. They never disappoint. Moving forward, when I bike to Tempe, I'll go the extra distance to hit up Four Peaks.
