  • I'm writing this review because I honestly feel other people's safety could be at stake, I know that sounds extreme but bear with me... a few weeks ago I called my local shop bicycle ranch to obtain a quote for a trek domane carbon to be picked up by the shop if possible ( I live down the street a couple miles only) and reassembled, as I had it professionally disassembled and packaged with the utmost care before it was shipped from Las Vegas. I reached an employee who said that was possible but that it would be a 20 dollar pickup, due in cash at time of pickup. I said that is fine, and we agreed it would be picked up the next morning. 9am and he was there, but in a personal sedan not any kind of work vehicle. He pulled out the parts that had been packaged carefully and wrapped as boxed and just put them in the backseat. Felt weird to me but I didn't want to make a deal about something small at the time. When I arrived to pick it up, I noted that the bicycle was unwashed, and the front tire was seriously low on air, too soft to ride on. I asked him to pump up the tires and said thank you very much, at this point I'm just looking forward to riding the bicycle even if I'm not overly impressed with the shop at this point. I ride off, and within 5 minutes as I'm going down a bike path tunnel, I start gently making the left turn and the front wheel totally locks up and I almost go face first into a concrete corner of the retaining wall. When I called the shop and spoke to whoever answered, I asked to speak to the owner since the employee was unable to provide any answers. He declined to be of help at all in that regard, still I'm not upset because I don't know what's wrong, I just want to make sure the bike is safe. To me it looked like the front brake cable has been routed totally incorrectly, as every single time I turn the bars to the left the brakes activated immediately. I reached out to the owner via Yelp and asked for help. Markus Zimmer the owner answered quickly and was very friendly. I asked him if it was normal for employees to pick up customer bicycles up in their cars, to which he responded no and asked if it was the employee by name, I responded affirmatively and he said it's not the first time he's picked up bikes that way and he's definitely hes not supposed to be doing that. Awesome. I told him the brake cable appeared to be routed wrong and that it almost cost me to hit my head on the concrete, hard. He said he would pick it up either himself or his shop mechanic on Monday I agreed that was totally fair and we would wait to see what he found. On Monday his top mechanic Matt who is very nice and I believe is very good at what he does, Came and picked up the bicycle. He immediately confirmed by looking at it that it was routed incorrectly and that it was totally wrong. I asked him if the person that picked up my bicycle and worked on it is even supposed to be working on This kind of bicycle, and he said he's not really supposed be doing anything except helping out a little bit when the shop gets busy. Fantastic. I told him I thought that was a really serious thing that the employee had done going out of his responsibility zone and that it almost caused a totally preventable accident or injury. Matt finished the bike very very well, he upgraded the brake cables, replaced the brake pads and cleaned the bike before dropping it off at my house. He said he completely disassembled the bike and reassembled it to make sure everything was torqued correctly and safe, which is what I had requested and I am happy with the work he did. What I am not happy about is that there was no follow up from the owner regarding the experience other than making the bicycle itself safe. I called him after a week just to touch base and let him know that I was happy with how he had made my bike safe, but that I still have no idea how to feel about the fact that his employee had almost caused an accident, assembling a bike he is not qualified to work on. I told him I would give him a very fair review for the fact that he handled the repairs to my bicycle appropriately and that I appreciate that, but my real concern at this point is that when I told him about the danger I feel his employee put me in I felt like I was talking to a brick wall with no real consideration or appreciation for that fact. I don't want to see anybody fired but for me to bring my bike back into that shop you would have to give me some really concrete assurances you take the safety of your customers seriously and I don't feel like I got that speaking to them and that is why I am leaving this review.
