  • I was sent to Siena via my midwife when I was around 34 weeks pregnant. This was my second pregnancy. I was experiencing intense pain in my upper left abdomen pain and we couldn't figure out the source. The maternity ward doctor on duty was an Indian/middle eastern woman. She was more concerned about the fact that I was having a home birth than the reason I was there. She ordered a blood panel, strapped me up to monitor the baby, and ordered an ultra sound for my RIGHT side. It was extremely painful to lay on my left side while they scanned my right side. When I asked the ultrasound tech why she was only scanning my right...she said that's what the doctor requested. And not to worry because I don't have anything on my left side that would cause pain. The doctor told me my blood work came back fine and my kidneys, gall bladder, and liver were okay via the scan. She said she figured I had pain coming from the right and it was radiating to the left. The scan ruled out those organs so it had to be heartburn. She insisted on doing a vaginal exam. I have no idea why since that is not my upper left and the baby monitor showed no signs of labor or contractions. (I was there for about 4-5 hours). She then proceeded to tell me how I'm not used to how my body is feeling because I'm pregnant. And that my baby is pushing up on my esophagus causing said heartburn and discomfort. It's just radiating more to the left. I was still getting lectured on my home birth decision at that point and that was the main focus of our conversation. She then requested they give me Mylanta. I refused the Mylanta because I knew it wasn't heartburn. She proceeded to prescribe me some to take at home, which I also refused. I was in tears because of frustration and insisted on being released. What was the point in still being there? The pain got worse that night (I had already been dealing with it a few days at that point) and I went and saw another doctor at a different hospital. It turns out I had acute pancreatitis. She called Sienna and asked for the blood results they pulled. It turns out the Siena doctor ordered a basic pregnancy blood scan...something you would do on a normal pregnant patient. This new doctor was baffled at the fact she didn't check my enzymes or anything else for that matter. I was treated like a normal pregnant patient, not someone who came into the emergency room in pain. Again, the Siena doctor was obviously just concerned I was having a homebirth and wanted to check my pregnancy out for herself, since I refused a vaginal exam. This new doctor said they should've checked for lipase and amylase, which they did not. She then laughed when I told her they said I had nothing to worry about on my left. She said if I ever run into that doctor, remind her there aren't only organs on the right side of the human body. I was then taken care of and thankful SOMEONE finally listened to me. To be brushed off and told I had heartburn and given and anatomy lesson about my esophagus was frustrating and insulting. And then prescribed Mylanta? Even if it was my first pregnancy, I'm not stupid. But this was my second pregnancy... I had obviously experienced this stuff before and would know the difference between heartburn or something more serious. Women who choose to have a midwife typically do so because they experience incompetent doctors such as this one. I had a similar experience with my first son at a hospital that resulted in my and my husband's decision to not go that route again. She only confirmed our decision. The nurse I had at Siena was amazing. She was a young black girl, but unfortunately I can't remember her name. I felt like she was the only one who was genuinely listening to me. I kept thanking her over and over... And she suggested I go get a second opinion because I was obviously in pain. This nurse and the fact that your hospital is beautiful is what gave you 2 stars. If you have more staff like her who genuinely care for people, your hospital has hope. This was my first and only experience with Siena. I will not be back unless I have the unfortunate event of being sent there against my wishes.
