| - Solid 3.5 stars, rounded up because I feel generous.
I've had this place bookmarked since they opened, but never seem to make it. Finally, over the weekend, my Mom and I found ourselves starving and we decided to check out Presto Cafe.
First, it's in an easy to find location, just off Stephanie/215, in the Golds Gym center. There is plenty of parking. One note - if you are on Stephanie, heading East, you won't be able to turn directly in to the center. You will have to make a left at Paseo Verde.
Upon entering, I was surprised at how small the place was. There are just 3 low tables in the front (kind of cramped), and then maybe 5 or 6 high top tables along the wall. It's tiny and although only one other table was seated when we entered, if quickly became crowded.
I was taken a bit back by the prices. I understand using quality ingredients is more costly, but I'll never understand why 2 sandwiches and 2 small drinks costs more than $23! That's really my only knock on this place....
For the food:
My Mom ordered the Ham and Cheese Please - Local smoked ham, gruyere cheese, Blueberries, Funions, field greens, Chili Mayo on rustic bacon cheese bread. She really enjoyed it. I tried a bite and really liked the addition of the Funions and chili mayo.
I had the B. Ruben - Corned Beef, cabbage slaw, gruyere cheese, Russian Dressing on a Rustic Raisin Rye bread. I really enjoyed it. I can't say that I've ever had a raisin rye bread, and it was a great complement to the other ingredients. I might even say that this was one of the best ruben's I've ever had!
Each sandwich was served with a small side of greens, which were mostly forgettable.
The special of the day was Chilean Sea Bass, which was $15.95. That just seems outrageous to me! This is basically like a fast(er) food type place, and although everything is made to order (I hope), I don't think the prices reflect the atmosphere or location.
The service was friendly and there wasn't a very long wait for our food, but we started out as the only people in the restaurant. I think the people who came in after us waited awhile, because we saw them much later next door.
Anyhow, everything was good and I can generally bite the bullet and pay extra for fresh, somewhat healthy food.
