| - Pittsburgh is really lucky to be home to so many world-class performing arts venues, and Heinz Hall might be the most beautiful of them all. Heinz Hall is home to the outstanding Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, although occasionally they will host other events here as well (comedy shows, etc.) The interior is breathtaking, with arched ceilings, chandeliers, and other ornate decor gracing the building at every turn. It's a great date night spot when you feel like dressing up all fancy n'at! Heinz Hall also has a gorgeous courtyard and sometimes they have special events like a cocktail-and-appetizers happy hour that they will host before shows. The acoustics in the building are outstanding and even in the far reaches of the balcony seats, I always feel like I've been able to adequately see and hear the entertainment.
Speaking of the balcony though...I have to agree with others and say avoid these seats if you can! The seat pitch is ridiculously minimal up there and my knees pretty much always end up touching the back of the seat in front of me. Admittedly, I'm a fairly tall drink of water, but even if I were an average height, I can't imagine being too comfortable. The orchestra seats are much better, with plenty of leg space in between seats....enough to cross your legs in fact! So as much as it pains me to do this, I have to take a star off for the balcony seats.
Being in the heart of the cultural district, there are plenty of parking garages nearby. However, depending on how big the event is and what else is going on downtown, getting out of those garages (and out of downtown) can be hairy after shows let out. If you don't mind walking a bit, do what I always do and park at the Grant Street Center at Penn and 11th...it's only a 5 or 6 block walk to Heinz Hall, and you'll be able to breeze out of dahntahn in no time at all after the show. Plus, if you've been sitting in the balcony seats, your legs will appreciate the stretch. :)
