| - Tapas are generally a hit or miss proposition for most folks.
Usually the small dishes come at a high cost since most folks tend to order more dishes to feel "full". Julian Serrano isn't the place to go for cheap(er) dishes, but it's certainly on top of the list for flavors. -1 star for the prices though, especially with Jaleo right next door.
A few of us from work came here during a busy convention week. Tables were hard to come by, but we somehow scored one right in the middle of the dining room at 8p during rush hour.
Ordered a couple bottles of Rioja, two paellas to fill up on (they take a while to make), and a ton of small dishes to go with the wine. There are plenty of different dishes for all different types of eaters - cured meats, cooked meats, veggie dishes galore, and a good mix of seafood.
Few dishes stand out in my mind:
-Rabo De Toro - can't really go wrong with Iberico pork, unless they overcook it into jerky. Not the case here. Tender oxtail mixed in with chewy iberico pork, served on a bed of creamy mashed potatoes.
-Cured serrano ham - the garlic tomato sauce stands out here. Slightly pungent but not overpowering garlic flavors on the acidic tomato base makes a great companion to the salty cured meat slices. We ordered another one not too long after we polished this one. Pairs really well with Riojas wine.
-Creamy mushroom risoto - what? Risoto at a spanish restaurant? Take my word for you, you want some. Something about that aged manchego cheese...I'm salivating just thinking about it.
-Japenese eggplant - never had it before. The texture is more spongy than your average eggplant and flavors are more mild. Still, very tasty veggie!
-Brava potatoes - slightly spicy french fry in cube form. Awesome!
-Pintxo De Chorizos - little chorizo skewers. Same mashed potato as the rabo dish, so I was a little disappointed there. But the sausages themselves were really flavorful. Spicy and savory all at once, every bite.
-Mixed paella / Marinera paella - we ordered two as we weren't sure how big the servings were (menu says 'for 2'). But, they came out to be fairly decent sized. Each paella dish probably enough to feed 3 or 4 (depending on how much carbs you want for the night). Still, both were outstanding - though my only gripe with these is that I didn't get a whole lot of saffron flavors in the rice. Maybe it's more traditional that way...but I like heavier saffron flavors in paella.
The restaurant itself isn't that big, there's also bar seating for those who want faster access to beverages. Design of the place is modern, very open, and everyone sits kind of close to each other. Service was great - even though the server was running around like crazy on this busy night, our glasses never went empty, and there was always food or bread on the table for us to munch on.
Gather up a group of friends, go here. Order a bunch of food and pair with some wine, then hang out and enjoy the spirit of tapas dining with good company.
