| - My boyfriend and I spontaneously decided to check this place out this past weekend and geez, I am SO glad that we did. I was totally blown away by House of Tricks! I didn't take any pictures because this place is pretty intimate. And although the dress code says casual, I personally thought that it was more on the dressy side BUT definitely not formal.
Parking: street parking.
The service: Terrific. At 7:00PM, I made a reservation for two for 7:15PM via Yelp. The place was CROWDED, but we showed up around 7:14PM and the waitresses were already waiting to seat us. Now that's efficient seating! As for the service itself, Axell was very friendly and took the time to go over the menu and made a lot of recommendations tailored to my interests, which I really appreciated. He also made sure our wine glasses were always full.
The interior: Cute and (really) cozy. My boyfriend and I got lucky because we were seated immediately. Unfortunately, the interior of House of Tricks is quite small (after all, it did use to be an actual house -- most of the seating is outdoors). This meant that we could hear every conversation going on at each of the tables. We came to House of Tricks to celebrate my birthday and some other huge life milestones. I didn't mind this so much, but I think the two of us would've appreciated a more intimate setting. However, we did stay at the restaurant pretty late and as it began to clear out, it certainly felt like we got the best seats in the house! If we ever go back, I definitely want to check out the outdoor seating. From what I saw, there was a lot of outdoor space heaters and lights. Definitely much more intimate.
The food: 10/10. I'm not 100% sure, but I think their menu is seasonal... For our appetizer, we ordered some scallop dish (but not the seared scallop BLT). I'm not a huge fan of seafood, but those freaking scallops were so tasty! They were HUGE, they were light, and they were packed with an explosion of different flavors. As for our entrees, I ordered the salmon (but not the same one as the one listed on the online menu) and my boyfriend ordered the veal osso bucco. Neither of us got the chance to try the other one's dish because we were both too busy devouring our own dishes. We. Ate. Everything. The salmon was the perfect portion and had the perfect balance between sweet and savory. I don't know which exact cab my boyfriend ordered, but we thoroughly enjoyed it as indicated by the empty wine bottle. It seemed to pair perfectly with the salmon. Everything was perfect.
So if you're looking for a new place to take your loved one(s), I'd definitely recommend House of Tricks! This is a great place for a romantic date or for a small, private gathering. This just might be my new goto restaurant for special occasions.
