I've only been to Magical Forest twice, once during the 2012 season and the second visit was to volunteer for Yelp Helps week last month.
My first visit was with a couple girlfriends and their daughters. I really enjoyed walking through the forest and taking photos of the beautiful lights. It was also a lot of fun taking the girls on rides like the train! It's definitely more exciting with children since it's more magical for them. The only attraction I really enjoyed was the gingerbread houses/buildings made by individuals and local companies.
I only had a little time to venture during the volunteer event, but it was still beautiful and magical. I also enjoyed a funnel cake from the Gingerbread Cafe, yum!
Bring the kids and bundle up! It gets really, really cold out there!! I would also recommend a light meal prior to your visit so you aren't subjected to all the "carnival food" and inflated prices. Oh, and don't forget water!
