As an update, I was contacted after my posting by a support rep, but as expected they make no effort to remedy the situation or do anything whatsoever to retain people as customers. This company is terrible and I would highly recommend going with a different rental company. They appear cheap, but they will make every effort and take every advantage to rip you off.
I also wanted to add that I signed up for the Hertz Gold online and they are great. It is amazing the difference. Amazingly enough, I just took a trip to Santa Barbara and rented a car with Hertz and even though I had an extra half day and upgraded to a Mercedes E class, it was still cheaper than when I used Dollar with 100 times better service.
