| - I go to Phoenix every year for spring training and I usually go with Alamo. (Ten years in a row, actually)
However this year I noticed Hertz was much cheaper so I decided to give them a shot because my opinion on renting cars is that they're all the same (at least the big names companies), so get the cheapest deal.
Anyway we arrive from California at 11:00 pm and jump off the stupid bus that brings you to the 5 story rental car cathedral thing that PHX has and head straight to the Hertz "store".
There were 6 or 7 people in line behind the rope waiting to get there cars and there was 1, ONE, person working here. Why? Because they're outsourcing and they had 4 or 5 of these little kiosk things where you pick up and phone and use the touch screen to initiate what is basically a Skype call to a human rep. They all had customers at them, so we waited for one to open up.
So after waiting my time in line, I'm next up and approach the ATM-like kiosk, pick up the phone receiver, and hit the touchscreen that tells me that the next available rep with be with me shortly. After five minutes a guy comes on the screen. He starts talking but I hear nothing and then my call cuts off and he's gone.
At this point, I'm not too happy. We've been here for 20 minutes and I just want to get my car and go to our hotel. Usually this is a five minute process when I've used Alamo, with there kiosks that print out your reservation tag and you're gone.
I was about to give up and just walk over to Alamo and get a car from them (nobody was in line over there), when my friend was able to connect with another guy on another screen. Even though I had made the reservation online and declined all the extra crap like their fake insurance, prepaid gas, and car upgrades etc, the man I was Skype-ing with ran me through all that again, and I declined it all again.
The hilariousness of this the situation reached its peak here as my friends essentially began working for Hertz, guiding people to the kiosk things and helping them how to use this stupid system, as I continued my call. The one actual person working there appeared to be somewhat relieved to be getting some actual help.
The funniest part was the guy next to me got his drivers license stuck in the machine and they had to get pliers to pry it out of the machine. Not good times there. If that gets destroyed, 1, you're not going to be able to get a car, and 2) you're not flying home after the weekend.
Anyway after wasting a half an hour on this circus, I had my reservation ticket and we went downstairs and got our car.
Aside from the initial experience of obtaining the car, everything was fine. We got a Kia Rio thingy and it got good gas mileage and was fine for four guys getting around the area to a few ballgames. Returning it was smooth, too.
I am still waiting for my Southwest points from them to post, too, and it's been a week. Probably will have to call them if that doesn't happen soon.
Anyway Hertz, at least at the Phoenix airport location, is definitely not something I will be using again.
BTW Hertz, nationally, is starting to install cameras inside their cars. I find that pretty disturbing. Go Google those stories if that piques your interest.
