| - My family and I always go to St. Lawrence Market whenever we're up in Toronto. Other than the nostalgia factor though, St. Lawrence Market is a tourist's haven for the fresh produce of Toronto, located so close to downtown.
Upon walking in, you're hit with the smells of fresh seafood, bagels, pasta, etc. So overwhelming that you're literally drooling over the vendor's produce (but I hope you don't!). That's why my tip is to come here hungry. Or at least get here after breakfast so that you'll have done so much walking around that you're hungry for lunch. Really, that's the ideal situation.
After spending hours marveling at all that's available in the morning, my family and I usually can't resist some smoked salmon from one of the many fish markets. The key though, is to figure out what you want. With the variety of fish markets that hold an even larger variety of ready-to-eat fish products, you'll easily get lost. Even if you don't know, the vendors are very helpful explaining the differences between Indian candy, the smoked , and the double-smoked. (Honestly though, they're all delicious)
You would think my family takes the smoked salmon home as souvenirs or for the road, but nope! Then we head over to the fish and chips stand in the corner and order exactly that--fish and chips. There's also a variety of fish you can choose from at different prices here. I quite liked the haddock and chips. It's then that we set up shop at a table with our smoked salmon, any additional market items we bought (cheese, crackers, etc.), and our fish and chips. It's really a perfect way to spend a morning/afternoon with loved ones.
A tip though, Saturday mornings are really packed. But if it's the only time you can go, I'd absolutely recommend it. Just be warned that you'll be looking for a parking spot for a bit.
