  • Color me unimpressed. After visiting and enjoying Pour in Asheville, I was looking forward to the pour-it-yourself concept coming to Charlotte. Hoppin' falls short of my expectations for a few reasons... First, price. Watch your pours carefully! At 50-90 cents per ounce, you can rack up quite the tab without realizing it. Let me do the math for you, party people. Even in the middle of the road, at 70-cents per ounce, a pint will run you $11.20! On our first visit, Ted and I barely cleared 2-beers each and our tab was almost $40. Call me crazy, but I'd rather just drink from the source and visit one of our many breweries where beers are $5 or $6. Next, selection. We visited on a Panthers' home game day and were expecting a crowd. (So, I won't even ding them on how packed it was.) What we weren't expecting is a brand new spot with state of the art technology to be out of beer! When we arrived around 4pm, we counted at least 10 taps that were out/kicked. By the time we left, at least 5-10 more had kicked. And, last but not least, atmosphere. We LOVE Two Scoops (from the same owner) in Plaza Midwood and were hoping for a similar laid-back, old school feel. No such luck. Hoppin' is slick and industrial feeling. That translates to super uncomfortable for me, and certainly not some place I want to linger at over beer for hours. Also, I know this isn't really Hoppin's fault, but the crowd was also seriously South End douchey. It was SO loud because everyone was literally screaming at each other. And, I don't mean the "I'm old and grumpy at 35, quiet down you damn kids" loud. Like, "sit 3-inches away from your friend if you have any hope of hearing them" loud. If the attendants at the front hadn't been checking everyone's IDs, I'd swear everyone at the table next to us weren't a day over 18. People were super trashed and literally falling into our table/chairs. This kind of display, my friends, is why I don't want to live, work, play... any where near South End. Since that cute little rabbit in Bambi taught me, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all," I will add some highlights. Staff were everywhere and incredibly helpful and friendly. I love the assortment of pint glasses from local breweries and that you're encouraged to take a new glass on each visit. And, there are a good amount of TVs throughout. So, if you can score a seat, would be a decent place to watch the game -- just as long as you don't want to HEAR the game.
