| - Back in the early 90s, when I started seriously listening to the radio, this was THE station to listen to. The 'DVE Morning Show with Scott Paulson and Jim Krenn was hilarious. But beyond that, WDVE had a great music format. It was new and classic rock.
WDVE gave Pittsburgh it's first taste of such bands as Nirvana, Cracker, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Counting Crows, the Gin Blossoms, etc. The station used to have a show on Wednesday nights focusing solely on new music, stuff that was under the radar. Plus WDVE would still give you the standard Classic Rock acts like Journey, Styx, Bad Company, etc.
Somewhere along the lines, WDVE dumped the new rock for the most part and today appears to be solely focusing on "Classic Rock", which to me is the least innovative format a station can do--glorified oldies. There's nothing wrong with "Classic Rock" artists, but relying on them means you don't have to add anything new.
