| - The Old Fashioned is the place I go when I am entertaining out-of-town guests, otherwise I tend to shy away from it (and most of the other establishments on the square). However, this past week, after dinner with some friends on the square, we decided to stop by The Old Fashioned to have a drink and to try the cheese curds (so that we could settle the old debate of who had the better cheese curds: Graze or The Old Fashioned?)
The wait was long because they were clearing out tables and setting up for karaoke ( FYI: Wednesday night is apparently karaoke night, for those of you wanting to indulge in some drunken classics), but we were told that we could order from the kitchen at the bar, and we were welcome to any spots that we could find. Luckily, we found a row of chairs enough to fit our party at the back of the bar!
The bartenders are friendly and attentive, always managing to somehow fill our water cups even on a very busy evening. Impressive! My friend had the original Old Fashioned (of course), and I had the House Brew. We all shared a basket of cheese curds. The House Brew was much darker and heavier than I expected. I thought the house brew would be a pale ale, but it was almost dark enough to be a lager. It was delicious though - really rich and nutty, almost like Guinness. I also thought the Old Fashioned was pretty good, although sweeter than I would have expected.
Finally, the verdict on the cheese curds? (Drum rollllllllll) We had to give Graze the crown. Although the cheese curds at The Old Fashioned are great, they aren't as battered or as crunchy as the ones at Graze, which we all agreed was what really made them shine.
Til next time!
