  • Stopped by Steve's on this past Friday a little after 5 to pick up a large amount of beer for a party. I had heard good things about Steve's from friends and I knew that they get allocated tickets for the Great Taste so I was excited about their beer selection. Upon entering we were offered a nice tasting of beers and ciders. The rep pouring the samples was helpful and informative. The beer selection was pretty outstanding overall, they have plenty of great Wisconsin craft beer as well as beer from other outstanding breweries (Three Floyds, Ballast Point, Epic, Perennial). I filled an entire cart with delicious brew and went to the front. The cashier proceeded to box up the beer and ring it up, while this was happening a very nice lady offered to help carry our boxes out to the car. This is where this wonderful experience went south. After the cashier had finished ringing up all of the items he gave me the total ($229) and I gave him my credit card. He swiped the card but it seemed that the charge didn't go through. I looked over and the register display was pretty distorted and the way the screen flickered made me doubt the hardware. He proceeded to run it a second time and it still didn't go through. He then told me that the card had been declined. I responded that was impossible as I had thousands of dollars of available credit. He then quickly replied "What are you not from around here? I tried it twice and it didn't work. Do you have anything else to pay with?" I couldn't believe how rude he was considering I was likely making one of the largest purchases of the day. I ended up using my debit card and losing all of the points the purchase would have given me. Guess I won't be getting that free Southwest flight anytime soon... I would later find out that the automatic fraud protection had been engaged by the purchase and that was why the charge wouldn't go through. If he had let me look into what was going on instead of implying that I was destitute I could have found the text message asking for my approval. After what started out as such an awesome experience I drove away with a bitter taste in my mouth.
