I came to Mon Ami Gabi based on the number of great reviews as well as a live review I received from an English Gent here for a convention. I chose the filet in merlot sauce, again based on a number of reviews. Unfortunately, it was quite a disappointing meal.
I ordered my filet medium. Three quarters of the filet was well done and only a quarter was medium. The filet that is served is only about 4-5ozs. Therefore, with a piece of meat that small you need to be paying close attention while it's being cooked otherwise things are going to go down hill very quickly. This was clearly the fate of my poor filet. And for the price point, I didn't expect "prime," but "choice" maybe? No such luck. It was quite a tough piece of meat. I didn't complain because I knew I would not be coming back. Further, the frites were awful. They might as well have served the filet with a bag of potato chips. I suggest if you order this dish, substitute the frites for mash or a baked potato.
2.5 stars. 2 stars for the steak, a half more for the warm French bread. The bread was the only thing good about the meal.
