  • I WAS RACIALLY PROFILED AND ACCOSTED AT THE STORE This is my experience at Freshco at Dixie and Dundas in Mississauga. I was paying for my groceries when the cashier told me the wrong price for some bulk almonds. I told her that I would not take them but I am sure she had the wrong price. After I paid for the rest of the groceries I circled back inside the store and re-checked the price of the almonds. Indeed, the cashier had the wrong price. I decided to politely inform the clerk she had the wrong price and would like to take the almonds at the correct price. As I was walking through an empty cash line to circle back to my original cashier, I was physically accosted by a cashier by the name of Yin. She ripped the bag of groceries out of my hand and started yelling at me and told me I had not paid for my groceries and began a verbal tirade insisted that I had attempted to steal the groceries I had already paid for. It took this cashier more than 5 minutes to ask me where my receipt was. Which by procedure should have been the first question she asked instead of taking an immediate belligerent and accusatory tone, not to mentioned her continued verbal attacks against me. I informed her calmly that the receipt was in the bag she had ripped out of my hand and if she wanted it she had to look for it. She said "NO, YOU LOOK FOR IT!" not only did she treat me as if I had stolen items, I was treated as if I was common criminal as I was being berated by this cashier in front of the entire store. This behavior is tantamount to racial profiling and should have never have taken place. The two clerks who had originally cashed me out, apologized for Yin's behavior but Yin herself did not. She carried on with her original attitude as if I had was the one in the wrong in the situation, when I was the only one of the two of us who was cordial and composed. This is a clear case of defamatory behavior and racial profiling. Asking for receipt is acceptable, accosting a customer and accusing them of stealing and taking more than five minutes while you berate them and then finally ask for a receipt is wholly unacceptable. I am not one of those who thinks just being a visible minority and discrimination go hand in hand. But this clear violation of store procedure and the attitude that went with it to me indicates that this would have never have happened if I was not a customer of color. It's unacceptable.
