| - Buh-Bye Tonto. I have been going to Tonto for 13 years. This has been my go to celebration restaurant, birthdays, anniversaries, retirements, Saturday afternoons, etc. After today's experience, I'm taking a sabbatical. The veggie nosh portion has been shrinking for at least six months. Today I ordered the Manchego scalloped potatoes, the sweet potato leek onion gratin, the spinach, asparagus and carrots. The carrots were unremarkable in flavor. Spinach was good but literally was a mere three bites, TINY portion. Asparagus was too charred, all 6 spears. The Manchego potatoes were drowning in butter and cream, which is delicious but disallowed any significant flavor or texture for Tonto to call their own. The sweet potato gratin had a little more flavor but was, like the spinach, a child size portion.
I usually order the lemon caper sauce but today I tried the basil pesto cream. Ga-ROSS! Seriously, tasted like detergent was the primary ingredient, basil was undetectable.
The service has also been declining. Gone are the servers like Judah and Cody. The last server I had (before today) was indifferent and almost irritated (white dude, receding hairline, tidy beard). Today's server was SLOW and also indifferent. Katie did not stop by after the food was delivered by runners to see if all was well. After 8 minutes I flagged down a busser to advise that my mom was missing spinach, one of the five portions of her Nosh, which reminded me that my last nosh had also been served missing the spinach. How do you leave off one of five things?! A side of spinach was delivered. It was a grown up size and I was jealous. Katie eventually came to ask about dessert, we asked for a menu, she delivered and then disappeared. We wanted the warm chocolate buttermilk cake, two of them. But by the time she returned to learn of this, our disappointment ruined the moment.. The bill, I'm not kidding, took FOREVER. I sent my mom out ahead of me. She stopped a manager to chat about the food experience; the manager did acknowledge that the portions were smaller and added that it was because people were taking leftovers home. Uh, yah, that's called breakfast. The manager must have cornered Katie to brief her on our disappointment, which only caused me to sit there longer waiting for my credit card. Katie was sorry we did not enjoy our lunch. The bill was not adjusted. No dessert to go offered. Just "Sorry"...for less food, less taste and poor service.
The bussers and runners were AMAZING. Somehow that hasn't changed. They are professional, diligent and cooperative.
Tonto, I'm out.
