  • Tenant at Sonora Canyon , apt. 2181. Here's what we got for $915/mo for a 2-bed apt (I've been in the US for 15 years now & that was the highest rent I ever paid, but the poorest quality of service, no exaggeration. No garage either). When we first got our place, apt. 2181, (we had just moved from Upstate New York), we were handed a list to check problematic items in the apt that needed management's attention. We noticed several things. One was a leaking AC emergency outlet on the bathroom ceiling just above the bath tube in the guest bathroom. It was dripping nasty brown water all day long & it so happened that when we showered, it was directly on our heads. The bath tub had been repainted with cheap paint & peeled under my feet during a shower on day 3. The carpet was so dirty that, no matter how many times & how long I vacuumed it, my white socks would always turn dark gray after walking on it for 2 hours. The dryer would not dry our clothes if there was a towel in it. The dishwasher would leave all sorts of stains on our dishes & silverware (yes, we had used dishwashers before & we know to rinse our stuff thoroughly before putting it in). The ice machine in the freezer produced ice cubes that had yellow color & smelled like death, absolutely disgusting. The water from the tap tasted differently from the ice cubes in the freezer. We experimented & made ice with tap water & was really different. There were also ants in the master bathroom. We called maintenance on these issues. Any time we called maintenance, by the way, it would take a minimum of 2 days for someone to come, sometimes 5 (the slowest maintenance service I have seen ever since I've been in the US, again, no exaggeration). They fixed the dryer & the dishwasher, although the maintenance man (very nice guy but he had to work with what he had) told me he was not using his dishwasher & would wash his dishes by hand, to which I responded I would, too, if I wasn't paying that rent. The ants were half way exterminated. They told us that the ice machine was fine. The second time we addressed it (much as we tried, we couldn't get used to the smell & the vomiting desire that ice water evoked), we were told that the water was just bad. They never checked or replaced the water supply lines. Please remember the rent was $915/mo. On top of that rent, we paid over $80/mo for water, no matter how much we tried to preserve. So basically it was almost $1000/mo for the privilege to live there. We now live in a 3-bedroom apt. & pay less for water. And the leaking bathroom AC outlet? They came 5 or 6 times in the 5 months we were there before we decided that we were getting quite ripped off at that place, & after it kept dripping for 5 months (5 months!!!) (so fun when you try to sleep or want to take a shower when there's brown water dripping on your hair), they finally replaced the whole AC unit above that bathroom, just in time for the winter, thank you so much, Sonora Canyon! 2 months into our lease, we got neighbors underneath us that smoked probably 10 packs of cigarettes daily. Guess who was getting poisoned through the pipes in the bathrooms: we were! These people were also very active & energetic at night, slamming their front door with full force & screaming at each other. Fun...We told management about this once we were determined to leave because of the high price & poor service. Nothing changed. When I went into the leasing office & informed them of our decision to leave & why we were leaving, they were absolutely adamant that we had to pay a penalty, which per the lease was a month's rent for leaving early. It turned out, there were also concessions to pay, so the entire amount was $1,068.38. I talked to the manager & explained that, as nurses, my boyfriend and I work really hard for our money & that we would have stayed if the quality of the apt corresponded to the rent amount, which it didn't, on top of us getting poisoned by chain smokers. She offered to give us another apt, but I reminded her the policies would be the same &that we wouldn't want to do an entire move only to end up into another expensive and poorly managed apt, Nothing persuaded her to waive the penalty, even thought they hadn't lived up to their part of the contract, which is to address & resolve issues timely. When the inspector came on the day I had to hand in the keys, he noticed two dents on the counter top. Those had been there ever since we moved in. He said that, if we had not marked them on that initial move in check list, we would be charged for the dents. I said that when we moved in, there were about eight other priorities with that apt that we had to address & we did not cause the dents on the counter top since we use devices called cutting boards when we cook. Needless to say, we just got a bill for $98.44 for that counter top..1,068.38 in penalty was clearly not enough. (See end on their FB page).
