| - The Schofield is a very pretty, comfortable hotel (and residence) with warm, friendly staff. However, it just didn't meet my lofty expectations for a Kimpton hotel.
The lobby is bright and airy, with high ceilings, large windows, and light colors throughout. The decorative fire pit in the lobby is beautiful and has a number of comfortable seats -- including a couple of funky square ones set into walls -- around it. There are muffins and coffee in the lobby in the morning, and there's a wine happy hour every afternoon from 5:00-6:00. The "Good News" bulletin board across from the elevator doors is a great, cheery touch. (Although, sadly, it was not able to be filled or changed often enough during my stay because of the state of the world. Sigh.) The hotel section is floors 1-7, with residences on floors 8-14. A small but clean and well-appointed gym - with lots of machines -- on the 8th floor -- is open to everyone. A nice, large old stairwell runs up the center of hotel. Also, the hotel is pet friendly; I saw several guests with small dogs during my stay.
The rooms were relatively old-school, plain-ish rooms with relatively modernish furnishings -- all sort of bland though. The bathroom was huge. (Interestingly -- possibly only to me -- there was no towel rack for hand towels, which has been the case so far in other Kimptons I've stayed in. I'm not sure why the Kimpton designers hate hand-towel holders, but for the record, I find them useful. :-) ) The bed was very comfortable; it was a little too firm for me - even though I usually prefer firm beds -- but it still had me sleeping soundly for more than 9 hours a night, 3 nights in a row, which is rare! The hotel room doors are relatively thin and let in a lot of noise from up and down the hall. (Mostly I'd hear hotel staff talking to each other, morning and evening, which may have been because we were a few doors from the staff elevator. On two mornings, it seemed like the housekeeping staff were yelling to each other across rooms also, so that may have increased my impression of thin doors.)
The largest problem I had was that on a Sunday, we left the room at 11:15am -- removing the Do Not Disturb / "Take A Hike" sign as we left -- but the room wasn't serviced by the time we returned around 10:00pm. I confirmed with the desk that, indeed, at a hotel as nice as a Kimpton, service is not supposed to stop at 11am on a weekend. As that was my last full day at the hotel, it put a damper on my impression.
