| - Sake brewing company in Toronto!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm going to give them 10 stars for that!!!
I got into sake when I visited Artisan Sake Maker (started 2007) in Granville Island, Vancouver. Sake-making is such an art!
Unfortunately, that makes Ontario Spring Water Sake Company (started 2011) my 2nd sake location to visit. Which means Canadian sake isn't new to me. Also they do not have a 100% Canadian sake (all ingredients from Canada!). The Vancouver sake company's Osake Fraser Valley Junmai is 100% Canadian (rice was grown and harvested in BC)! AND they have the Sparkling Sake as part of their regular making (Ontario's JUST started it, now available LIMITED TIME in Dec 2013)!
Pasteurized sake means many of the bottles they sell in-house ARE NOT sold at LCBO (or BC Liquor Stores) because they must be in the fridge! Sake (considered wine) is stored on shelves at LCBO -and they need to have a longer shelf life!
TIP: DEFINITELY pick up sake from both these two companies because you won't find them in stores!!
SO!!! Putting these comparisons aside, Ontario Spring Water Sake Company is still an amazing brewery with friendly staff and a beautiful interior. Nama Nama sake (their signature bottle) is a rich, very strong-flavor sake.
What's really cool is that they offer random sake when they make a batch, as in.... a random sake that's NOT on the menu. When we visited a couple weeks ago, we got to taste Bottle ##??? which featured green apple! This will NOT be offered again, and you just have to wait to see what their next random creation will be!
NOW... THE TOUR:
- $15 per person
- sample 4 sake in a small little sake cup (the mini mini ones!), regularly would be $4 each sample (or $10 for 3)
- your tour guide will walk you to the WINDOW and POINT.
- she will then walk you to the POSTERS and READ
- this tour will last about 40 minutes
I'm sorry but the tour was definitely not good! I also thought our tour guide (although very sweet and friendly) is not very familiar with the sake brewing process herself. And she is totally an amateur speaker/presenter!
HOWEVER: if YOU are interested in the sake process or YOU bring up some good questions, this is what the tour guide is for! And the tour was VERY worth this Q&A. But I notice that only my half of the tour group asked these questions. The other half had no clue (sake is totally new to them) so they were just talking amongst themselves.
Maybe just our tour guide wasn't so good... because Elaine K met another staff who is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about sake. This was what brought us here! Sadly to say, I am disappointed in our tour.
- 1 star
therefore, 9 stars
