| - Pretty disappointed in Cast Iron Waffles. Part of my disappointment is in myself for choosing this place without knowing much about it. My wife and I were coming to the Southpark area to visit a family member who had recently moved there. I saw this place on Yelp. It looked interesting, and I chose it over some other breakfast places like Flying Biscuit and Original Pancake House. Bad choice. It didn't look promising when we walked in just before noon (they're open til 3 PM) and there were was one other party (two people) in the place. When we saw that the place was essentially just waffles and coffee, we debated whether to walk back across the roundabout and go to Terrace Cafe to get a proper breakfast/brunch. We decided to stay and give it a shot.
I got a maple buttercream bacon waffle, and my wife got a plain waffle with powdered sugar. When I inquired about syrup, I was told "we don't have syrup, our "belgian liege" waffles are sweet enough without them." True enough for my waffle with the buttercream topping, but not so much for my wife's naked waffle. And I'm pretty sure I read other reviews in which other people had gotten syrup for an extra charge. Anyway, whatever. We were in a bit of hurry so we finished our waffles and coffee and left. The girl who served us was the only visible employee during our visit, and she asked half-heartedly "how was everything?" literally as we were walking out the door.
In fairness, my waffle was pretty good with the bacon and maple buttercream topping. However, their "naked" waffle is not savory or sweet enough (despite what the employee claimed) to stand on its own without syrup or some other topping. The coffee was pretty good also. I would advise anyone thinking about eating here to adjust their expectations... this isn't a breakfast place. If you substitute waffles for doughnuts or other pastries, its essentially a coffee shop. I fully acknowledge that I didn't educate myself enough going in. However, the overall experience was disappointing enough even if I had known more about the place. If you want a coffee specialty drink, it's probably a good spot. But if you're looking for breakfast, there are plenty of better options in the Southpark area.
