| - Our group consisted of 2 moms, and 5 kids. ages: 9, 9, 6, 5, 2.
We bought the "dome" tickets to sit up top with the expanded view.
Really not worth it.
Might have been better if we got there early to pick out the best seats, but they are in groups of four. 4 kids got to sit together, and then us moms had to share a four with another couple. Its a tight squeeze. I was sitting pressed up against another lady and it was awkward and uncomfortable. also, our knees touched with the person facing you. its very cramped. first class had more legroom, head rests, and reclining seats. coach was a little more cramped. the ADA car was a little more roomy, but its great that its available.
If we had had two fours it would have been nicer. It was also pretty warm up top because it was sunny and the re are windows in the ceiling.
No one told us there were headphones available, if in fact, there are, for a guide.
There is no running water on the train, so you have to purchase bottles if you dont bring enough. The cafe car was fairly expensive (I figured it would be, but just fyi) A sandwich, chip and soda is 8$. Popcorn is 4$. Hotdogs were 3.50.
In first class (which the dome is part of) there is free coffee, tea, hot water, and some free snacks like granola bars. Our group spent much of the time downstairs in other sections of the train. My friend said she saw a car with tables where you could sit, but I didnt see that. I asked the conductors where the cafe car was, and I asked her if we could sit in other areas (yes, if there was room) but she didnt volunteer anythign about a lounge car, and there was no info on any brochures or anything I saw. thats annoying.
The ride itself, is pretty, but has limited appeal for children. We did the 3 hour roundtrip from rockside to akron. it goes very slowly and stops all the time. the kids were bored out of their minds. although, when we disembarked, they all said how cool it was. us moms were pretty stressed from trying to keep it all together, though.
the dome seats were 74$ for one adult and two kids. it was about 30$ more than if we'd paid coach. really not worth it for us. there were mostly adults up there, couples, who were very touristy (they all did the 3 hour roundtrip, too) and I could see how it might be a relaxing and interesting little ride, for grownups.
also, the bike ride/train combo seems more fun and more cost effective.
maybe the polar express would be good for kids, but the regular ole csvr, meh.
no really spectacular views, imo. except, possibly, seeing the underside of a couple of bridges. otherwise, its mostly trees, valley, grass. not too exciting.
